About Torben Mersholm

- Words from an article from the magazine ARTICULATE edition 38.

In the world of ceramic sculpture, Torben Mersholm stands as a luminary, weaving narratives of depth and introspection through his clay creations. With a career spanning several decades, Mersholm's artistic journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion, inspiration, and the tactile beauty of his chosen medium.

Mersholm's creative drive finds its roots in the fertile soil of childhood experiences and early artistic encounters. Reminiscing about his formative years, he traces his artistic inclinations back to elementary school, where a love for grotesque comics kindled the spark of creativity. The pivotal moment, however, unfolded in the early 1990s at the Statens Museum for Kunst, where Michael Kvium's "Guds krigslist" left an indelible mark on Mersholm's artistic psyche. This encounter became the catalyst for his artistic evolution, inspiring him to delve into the complexities of human dilemmas and the facets we often conceal from the world.

Over the last three years, Torben Mersholm has dedicated his artistic endeavors to the realm of ceramics, describing it as his element. The malleability of clay, the technical challenges, and the boundless freedom it offers have become the cornerstone of his creative expression. Driven by a relentless pursuit of perfection, Mersholm seeks to continually refine his craft, using clay as the medium to explore and expose the nuances of human experience.

The evolution of Mersholm's artistic voice is a narrative of transition. Moving from a direct approach to his works during his painting days, he now emphasizes depth and thoughtfulness in his creations. Themes are drawn from personal experiences, societal movements like the Woke movement, and the profound awareness of mortality. Having faced death twice in his life, once through a car accident and later battling throat cancer, Mersholm's works have become poignant reflections of the human condition, capturing the essence of his thoughts and emotions during those challenging periods.

Unlike a structured and project-oriented approach, Mersholm's creative process is dynamic. He embraces the spontaneity of sculpting, rarely relying on sketches. A self-imposed dogma guides him – if an idea lingers in his mind for more than two days, it becomes the basis for a new creation. The freedom to let a piece evolve organically, with the possibility of introducing unexpected elements, is a liberating experience he cherishes, an element he couldn't fully explore in his previous work with paintings.
For Torben Mersholm, clay is not just a medium; it's a love affair. His affinity for this simple material goes beyond its tactile nature. It's about understanding the craftsmanship, navigating the unpredictable processes, and reveling in the forms, material choices, and glazes. The simplicity of clay, combined with its complexities, has become the cornerstone of Mersholm's artistic expression.

Unschooled in formal composition, Mersholm relies on instinct and experience when crafting his compositions. He acknowledges the lessons learned from previous works, emphasizing the importance of a good gut feeling over strict adherence to rules. Among his artistic heroes, figures like Michael Kvium, Andrew Barton, Rose Eken, Malene Hartmann Rasmussen, and J F Willumsen have left indelible impressions on Mersholm. However, it is the Danish ceramist Lars Calmar who holds a special place in his artistic pantheon, being the artist he aspires to be compared to.

Torben Mersholm's artistic journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion and the dynamic interplay between the artist and their chosen medium. As he continues to shape clay into thought-provoking sculptures, Mersholm invites us into a world where the tangible and the intangible merge, creating a tapestry of stories waiting to be discovered in the folds of each meticulously crafted form.
